8. Creating the Dothraki language
The Dothraki language that Daenerys Targaryen struggles to learn was created by David J. Peterson, a former English professor with a master’s in linguistics. The language, which doesn’t appear in George R.R. Martin’s books aside from a few names and phrases, was created just for the show and contains about 3,700 words according to Entertainment Weekly. However, creating the language for High Valerian, in which Peterson only had a two phrases to go on from the books, has been much more difficult. Peterson admitted to Entertainment Weekly, “There’s always the fear that George [R.R. Martin] might get annoyed with me.”
