Winner: The Smurfs 2
Typically, when the original is panned by critics, you don’t make a sequel. Smurfs 2 broke the odds and created an equally terrible movie. The second Smurfs film is both live action and animated. It follows the Smurfs and the humans as they try to rescue Smurfette, who was kidnapped by Gargamel. There are new Smurf-like characters called Naughties.
Smurfs 2 should have taken a page from the Despicable Me storybook. They knew how to use their celebs correctly. The best human character of the film is Hank Azaria as Gargamel. His bad guy is so hilarious that you forget that the rest of the movie isn’t very good.
Even though Smurfs 1 and 2 have gotten terrible reviews, the third film is currently in production. But, hey, you know what they say - third time’s a charm?
