2. Snow White and Rob Lowe
In 1989, Allan Carr became the producer of the Oscars. Carr was large in musical theatre, winner of a Tony, and most notably known for Grease. However, his taking over of the Oscar ceremony was disastrous, and exemplifies the differences of film and live theater. While good-natured and almost cute, his opening number for the award show featured a Snow White singing with Rob Lowe about wanting to make it in Hollywood, and memories of Hollywood’s long history. It also featured a chorus line of Giant kicking stars amid the long song and dance rendition, along with a parody “We Only Have Stars for You” to the classic “I only Have Eyes for You” by the Flamingos. Disney later threatened to sue due to the unauthorized use of Snow White. Oops. The act was widely ridiculed, and is remembered as an embarrassment and insult to the awards.
