5. Ellis Grey
Actress Kate Burton played Ellis Grey. She was Meredith Grey’s mother and was a world famous surgeon, twice honored with the Harper Avery Award, until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The two didn’t have a very strong relationship because her disease caused her to barely recognize her own daughter. When she passed away, Meredith felt fine about it, until she experienced her own near-death experience and her mother’s spirit told her she was “anything but ordinary.” She was eventually cremated, put into a beautiful urn, and washed down a surgical sink at the hospital by Meredith. They believed this was a fitting tribute because she dedicated her life to the hospital. She was a character in seasons 1, 2 and 3 and since her death on the show, she has been an actress on hit series Scandal.
