Susan Grey, who was played by actress Mare Winningham, was Thatcher Grey’s second wife, the mother of Lexie Grey and Molly Grey-Thompson, and the stepmother of Meredith Grey. When Ellis Grey, Meredith’s real mother, passed away, Susan helped her cope. She went to the hospital one day complaining of long-lasting hiccups and was set to have emergency surgery, but died before they could begin operating. A rare complication from a routine procedure to treat the hiccups and acid reflux problems is what killed her. Her death inspired Lexie Grey to convince all patients to fight, even if they had a low survival rate, since people survive from hiccups almost 100 percent of the time. She was featured in season 2 and season 3, and since the show, she has made appearances in American Horror Story and Hawaii Five-0.
