Anyone who is watching HBO’s True Detective understands just how great this complex show really is. It’s the most serious thing in the world of scripted television today, with the philosophical ramblings of Matthew McConaughey’s Rust character to the brutal murders depicted in the show. But everyone needs to loosen up and some Internet parodies will help you do that.
Joel McHale parodied the show on The Soup with his Community co-star Jim Rash, with the two playing McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. As Digital Spy notes, the sketch makes fun of the character’s heavy accents, which, combined with the dialogue, sometimes makes it hard to understand them. Even within the world of True Detective, no one can understand what either of them are saying.
UpRoxx picked up a parody from Rifftrax‘s Conor Lastowka, in which he replaced the shocking video Harrelson’s Marty watched this week with the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. Yes, that is as horrific as it sounds. You can check out that video here. (Warning - strong language.)
Another funny parody is a Law & Order style opening:
One video that’s getting a lot of attention was posted by a YouTube user who claims that the Yellow King - the person Rust and Marty think did the murder - has been hovering over the show the entire time. It’s racked up 200,000 views and is not be seen if you don’t want to be spoiled.
True Detective’s first season wraps up this Sunday night.
