This episode dives deep into Mrs. Krabappel's character for the first time in the series, and she is revealed as a single woman who is desperate to find love. Bart is given a month of detention for breaking the class fish tank with a yo-yo. During his detention, Bart takes advantage of his teacher's desperation by writing a series of phony love letters under the moniker "Woodrow." Mrs. Krabappel falls for these letters and for "Woodrow", not realizing it is Bart writing them. Meanwhile, Homer is overheard swearing by his neighbors, the Flanders'. Ned asks him to stop swearing after his son repeats these swear words. Homer uses a swear jar after his talk with Ned.
