1. Face Off
This 1997 actioner directed by John Woo had Travolta in an unfamiliar role…as the villain. He begins by playing FBI Special Agent Sean Archer, but undergoes an experimental face transplant surgery to become freelance terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage, to learn where in Los Angeles he’s hidden a deadly bomb. Focused on by his personal vendetta against Troy for killing his young son, Archer doesn’t tell his wife, Eve, played by Joan Allen about the switch or his rebellious teenage daughter. Of course, Troy escapes custody, kills everyone who knew about the switch but not before undergoing it himself to look like Archer. Travolta did a masterful job of playing a character so heartless and apart from his usual roles that it sends a chill up your spine. I’ve really never been able to look at Travolta the same, but that range is what makes him such a phenomenal actor!
