Wildfire burning near the hills northeast of Los Angeles

Wildfire, first reported before 6:00AM, grew rapidly in the hills northeast of Los Angeles today. California residents are left questioning whether the fire will hit their homes.

Authorities in Southern California have ordered an evacuation at the edge of the fast-moving wildfire. Citizens were asked to follow police orders, as police followed up door to door. According to the Associated Press. The Los Angeles County Fire Department deployed seven engines and three helicopters to fight the blaze that has struck 30 acres above a neighborhood near Angeles National Forest. The wilderness area is about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

In 2009, wildfire in the San Gabriel Mountains burned for months. The catastrophe destroyed over 80 homes. This past December, wildfire grew in California and destroyed 22 structures, according to CNN.

A number of factors contribute to the spread of wildfire in California. The historically dry era has suffered from drought in the recent past. Offshore winds are also a factor. Extreme gusts have been reported by the National Weather Service to reach 70 mph.
