8. Lay Lady Lay (by Bob Dylan)
Yes, you read that one right. Bob Dylan’s 1969 hit song, “Lay Lady Lay,” was originally written for the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy but wasn’t submitted in time to be included. It was released as a single and hit the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 7 and the U.K. singles chart at No. 5. Interestingly, Dylan had first offered the song to the Everly Brothers, but when he sang it for them in a very soft voice, the story goes that the Everlys thought he sang, "Lay lady lay, lay across my big breasts, babe." Thinking the song was about lesbians, the brothers weren’t sure they could get away with that and declined the offer. After Dylan recorded the song himself and the brothers heard the true lyrics, they later recorded the song for their EB 84 album. This wasn’t a threat to Bob Dylan’s masterpiece, but a good rendition all the same.
