The classic Sam Cooke recording of this song was made in June of 1957 and reached No. 1 by December, a spot it held onto for two weeks. It also set Sam Cooke on the road to superstardom. This is another song that has claimed a spot in both The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, as well as in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Everly Brothers recorded this song live at their Reunion Concert in 1983 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The song was released on their 1985 album, Born Yesterday.
