No. 6: The Flexitarian Diet
The Flexitarian diet aims at weight loss, longer life expectancy and prevention of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Emphasizing fruits, vegetables and whole grains, it involves mainly vegetarian choices but doesn’t necessarily exclude meat. Dietician Dawn Jackson Blatner claims that a little meat is fine whenever one craves it. But with this diet, she says, dieters will live 3.6 years longer and weigh 15 percent less than those who consume meat on average.
For those who wish to consume protein from plants, choices range from tofu, beans and lentils to peas, nuts and seeds.
