3) "Simply Beautiful"
When Al wanted to be intimate he got right up next to you. That beautiful understated acoustic guitar part feels like it’s played by Al sitting alone in a room with you and whispering the music in your ear. “What about the way you love me?” There’s commonly a hint of dark edges when Al gets in close, like fire and brimstone and old testament judgements are carried with him and not too far away. There was always a little show business to Al’s best work though, he never feels like John Lennon screaming to his dead mother or exorcising his own personal demons. When Al gets into it or gets in close he feels like a consumate pro, but without the crass, gutless, smooth music marketed as soul at that time. A pro in the best sense of the term, fully in control of his voice and the song and the words that he wants you to hear.
