5) "Take Me to the River"
That awesome weird intro about Little Junior Parker, the weird almost dark vibe in this song, the mixing of gospel imagery with secular subject matter doesn’t get much more pronounced and mixed up than it does here. “I don’t know why I love you like I do, after all the changes that you put me through. You stole my money and my cigarettes and I haven’t seen hide nor hair of you yet.” The brilliant and subtle first verse in a song focused on that most evangelical of symbols, the river of baptism and cleansing.
However, it's left up to the listener to decide if Al is singing to a girl who’s left him or a God he’s trying to believe in, and by extension the new and clean lifestyle he’s trying to create for himself . What makes the lyrics in this song so great is how quickly he goes from talking to one to the other though, the second verse is clearly about a girl, “I don’t know why she treated me so bad, look at all those things that we could have had.” This is the portrait of a man in crisis, mixed up and caught between the secular and the spiritual in a wrenching, doubting, tortured way.
