6) "Strong as Death/Sweet as Love"
That rarest of rare genres of music, an eerie soul song. There’s a clear sense of menace or danger on the fringes of this, like almost the whisper of a threat. This was a 1975 B-side. It’s way too weird a song to have ever been put out as a single. There’s a menace and a depth to this that’s unexplained and creepy. Why, for instance, does he say “we don’t have that much time”? The phrase “strong as death” is taken from the Song of Solomon in the bible, and there’s the hint of more of a biblical subtext here, creation and the void before it. “If I could tell a story of just how it was before there was you and me, before there was love. It was a sad affair.” A truly unique, beautiful and arrestingly strange song.
