One of the greatest country songs ever, transformed by Al into an epic soul ballad. A brilliant Kris Kristofferson song in its own right, Al makes an originally intimate country lament into something bigger and grander and lights it on fire. This live version is from a 1978 performance in Tokyo he released on his 1981 Tokyo Live album. There are a couple examples of Al taking a country song and making it into a soul thing. He also did it with the Hank Williams country waltz masterpiece “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” on his 1973 Call Me album. In doing country songs, he’s in the tradition of soul singers like Ray Charles and Solomon Burke who did the same thing before him. Great soul singers have found powerful expression in the language of country music and this is one of the masterful examples.
