9) "I’m a Ram"
A criminally unknown song and a weird sounding title. The horn hits, the guitar riff, the moving bass, Al doing the sexual/religious soul music thing here to great effect (“there’s a ram caught in a bush”), with the band driving on hard behind him. Leroy Hodges was Al’s bass player during his classic period and you can hear him all over the groove in this one, picking it up and keeping it interesting and strong. This one is off of his almost completely perfect 1971 Al Green Gets Next to You album. If you’re only going to buy one record of his, my advice is to make it that one. It also has a great album cover.
