That goddamn drum opening. I know it’s been sampled in rap songs, it’s that rare combination of an awesome groove that is incredibly difficult to hum or tap out. Listen to it and try to sing it. Listen to it and try to tap it out. That’s the great Al Jackson, Jr. on drums, one of the best, most brilliant drummers to play in any genre. The song itself is a type of brilliant next level soul. Al’s at his smooth, gripping, best; the inflections in his voice speaking volumes. Rarely do singers sound so completely locked in with their band as Al does on this track. The slightest turn and there’s a horn line or an organ riff right at his back, like they’re all breathing together and stepping into the cut in the same shoes.
