1) "Amazing Grace/Nearer My God to Thee"
My favorite footage of any concert or performance ever. It’s a scene from a documentary about Al called The Gospel of Al Green. There are various performance clips in the movie and this one is from a show he did at an army base in what looks like could be their rec room or cafeteria. Al doesn't sing one of his popular hits here, he sings a medley of two standard gospel songs. And this is gospel music in the highest sense, the band and the singer calling out for something deeper and more powerful and all consuming and finding it. Like an ancient rite, like a calling forth of the spirit into real life, Al brings out something here; he changes and transforms the bland room he's singing in into a holy ground of mystery and promise. A grand symbol of what music can do at its best, and how it can utterly change the world if only for 5 or 6 minutes.
