According to The Wall Street Journal, Nestle has made a deal with Cellular Dynamics Inc. to study how nutrients food in various foods effect brain and liver cells in humans. They hope to use the information that they gather to develop enhanced drinks, smoothies and other foods that would have health benefits for consumers.
Nestle is the first food company to test human cells to see the effects of nutrients on the human body. Competitors of Nestle, like the yogurt company Dannon, have also been investing money in medically enhanced products, according to TIME.
The direct effects of food ingredients on diseases have been a question in company’s minds for some time now. The market for health and wellness foods is projected to grow$200 billion in the next five years.
Nestle scientists hope to find how nutrients effect neurons and possible connections between nutrients and Alzheimer’s, diabetes and obesity.
