Many people have heard that drinking coffee dehydrates you, however, a new study suggests than it dehydrates you no more than drinking water does.
According to RelaxNews, researchers at Birmingham University took 50 men and had half of them drink four cups a coffee a day for three days. The other half of the group drank four glasses of water.
Both groups had a controlled diet and were required to do no exercise other than walking. After 10 days, the two groups switched.
“Despite a lack of scientific evidence, it is a common belief that coffee consumption can lead to dehydration and should be avoided, or reduced, in order to maintain a healthy fluid balance. Our research aimed to establish if regular coffee consumption, under normal living conditions, is detrimental to the drinker’s hydration status,” said Sophie Killer, lead author of the study.
RedOrbit.com reported that the research team wrote that coffee, consumed in moderation (by males) has the same effect on the body as water. The team also pointed out that the same may not be true for females as only males were tested.
