The polar temperatures that gripped much of the nation on Tuesday have been blamed for at least 21 deaths.
According to the Associated Press, the frigid temps shattered some records that had stood for more than a century.
The arctic blast that moved through the country claimed the lives of six people in Illinois, one in Indiana, seven in Michigan, two in Alabama and two in Missouri, The Weather Channel reports.
Four more deaths in Ohio may also be linked to the below freezing temps and authorities in Wisconsin and South Carolina are investigating if more than three deaths are cold-related, TWC notes.
To avoid more fatalities, most states have posted limits on how long anyone should be outdoors, if at all, in these temps.
Homeless people are especially vulnerable to the cold temperatures. A "Code Purple" has been issued in many states and shelters have seen a major increase in numbers.
Authorities also remind everyone to check on the elderly and those who may not have enough heat during the winter chill.
