Top Ten Van Morrison songs

8) T.B. Sheets - “Open up the window, and let me breathe.” One of the most suffocating and claustrophobic songs ever recorded. Either a metaphor for a stifling and choking relationship or a literal story about a girl dying in bed from Typhus. Strangely though he describes her as coming on to him in the midst of her illness, an incongruous action for someone so close to death. The sense of smell in this song almost attacks you. The rotten smelling yellow room, the sweat, the stench, the sickness and death. Van brings you in so close that you almost need some air just like him. It gets to feel like she’s almost trying to communicate her disease to him, to make him sick too, and Van is trying to stay alive in the face of it. Among the sweat and the stench is a tough soulful reaction away from it, the organ going and Van backing out slow.
