7. Wenzhou Train Collision, China
On July 23, 2011, 40 people were killed and 191 injured when one high-speed train rear-ended another and sent the trains, as well as China's dreams of using high-speed rails as a symbol of their progress, crashing to the ground. According to The New York Times, the wrong signals appeared for the conductor of one of the trains after the line was struck by lightning.
