5. Crimson Tide
This 1995 action/drama had Washington co-starring with Gene Hackman, George Dzundza, Viggo Mortensen, the late James Gandolfini, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Rick Schroder. Set in post-Soviet Russia, Washington played Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter, who staged a mutiny aboard his submarine to prevent his commanding officer Captain Frank Ramsey (Hackman) from launching missiles at Russia based on a garbled communication. Washington’s portrayal of an officer wanting to do the right thing and not act impulsively was enthralling not to mention his tense scenes with Hackman.
