8. Malcolm X
Directed and co-written by Spike Lee, this 1992 biopic had Washington starring as the African-American activist Malcolm X. Co-starring Angela Bassett, the film was largely based on Alex Haley’s 1965 book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The film chronicled key moments in the life of this extraordinary man and Washington was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal, which showed just how powerful an actor Washington is.
