The cost of a First Class stamp, previously 46 cents, will go up to 49 cents beginning on January 26th.
According to an article in USA Today, regulators decided to raise the price of USPS postage. This six percent rise in the cost of stamps is uncommon. Price increases depend on a number of factors, but officials said increases have been put into place in an effort to regain financial losses after an economic turndown.
The change, announced after packages, cards, and letters flooded post offices during the holiday season, will affect citizens choosing not to use the internet to send their mail.
A number of citizens were upset about the increases. According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, the Association of Magazine Media trade group feels that the increases are counterproductive.
“It will drive more customers away from using the Postal Service and will have ripple effects through our economy - hurting consumers, forcing layoffs, and impacting businesses,” Mary Berner, president of the group, said in the e-mail. “It doesn’t delay the inevitable but will hasten it.”
