James Cameron gave an in-depth interview this weekend, confirming several important aspects of his three sequels to Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time. The Oscar winning director behind Titanic and Terminator explained that the films will be made in New Zealand and will focus more on different aspects of the Na’vi cultures he created for the first film.
While speaking with the Associated Press, Cameron confirmed that he will shoot the movies in New Zealand, where Peter Jackson made his Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Cameron also made the original 2009 Avatar there.
Back in August, Cameron said that the first sequel will be out in 2016, a date he wants to stick to. For the new film, audiences will get to see much more of Pandora and Na’vi. “At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary,” he told the AP. “I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”
Cameron also confirmed that producer Jon Landau said back in April, that there will be scenes underwater. However, Cameron called rumors that the entire second will would be underwater inaccurate.
“There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films,” Cameron said.
For Avatar, Cameron really stuck with the story of Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington. However, the new films will expand upon his family, much like The Godfather focused on the Corleone family. “We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward,” he said. “It's really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like The Godfather.”
Avatar grossed $2.8 billion in 2009 and won three Oscars. The sequels will be released every December in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
