This 1996 updated stylized version of William Shakespeare’s classic love story was directed by Baz Luhrmann. DiCaprio played Romeo to Claire Danes’ Juliet. While it kept the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets were represented as warring business empires and swords were replaced by guns. DiCaprio and Danes’ on-screen chemistry was white-hot as they played the famed doomed lovers. Some plot details were shifted and the ending showed the two lovers’ bodies being removed by coroners. DiCaprio brought a primal vibe to the role, especially in the dueling scenes and the climatic death scene.
