5. 12 Years a Slave (2013)
Even though it only just came out, 12 Years a Slave is already being hailed as one of the best films of the year, and it is one of the most chilling and powerful biopics ever made. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Solomon Northrup, a free man who was tricked and sold into slavery. There is already Oscar buzz for Ejiofor for his magnificent portrayal of Northrup.
