Sony talks ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, transitioning more to television than film

The executives running Sony Pictures held a conference call with investors today and made a couple of key announcements regarding the studio’s future. CEO Michael Lynton said that the company will begin transitioning to making more television shows than movies, while co-chair Amy Pascal talked about the future of the Spider-Man franchise.

Lynton gave an outline of the company’s plans, noting that its goals will include “a significant shift in emphasis from motion pictures to higher margin television” production and distribution, reports Deadline. He also looked far ahead to 2015, estimating that Sony Pictures will generate $8.4 billion in the 2015 fiscal year.

He explained that the studio will be cutting back on film projects and that they will be “saying ‘no’ when in the past we might have said ‘yes.’” Directors will be told to consider the financial cost of their projects and the studio will be looking to make films with international appeal.

Spider-Man will play a key role in the studio’s future, even though the character is licensed through Disney’s Marvel. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2 and more sequels are expected in 206 and 2018. Since it’s the studio’s only big franchise, they are looking for ways to expand its scope, including films about secondary characters in Spidey’s universe.

“We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains,” Pascal said, reports TheWrap.

The Spider-Man series has grossed $3 billion, including both Sam Raimi’s three films and Marc Webb’s Amazing reboot.
