The Daily Show correspondent John Oliver will be featured in a topical comedy series on HBO next year. Oliver impressed viewers during his summer stint hosting the comedy Central show and it looks like HBO executives were watching, too.
Oliver’s show, which is currently untitled, will air Sunday nights and will cover news, politics and other events in the news.
Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, said in a statement that the network wasn’t interested in producing another talk show at first, but they were impressed with his Daily Show performance. “We are extremely excited that John has agreed to make HBO his home,” Lombardo said.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now,” Oliver joked. “I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”
Oliver has won Emmys and a Writer’s Guild Award for his work on The Daily Show. He joined the show in 2006 and hosted over the summer while Jon Stewart was making a film in the Middle East. He has had several stand-up specials on Comedy Central and hosts John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show.
But that’s not all! Oliver also has a role on NBC’s Community and hosts the popular satirical podcast The Bugle.
HBO did not set a specific premiere date for Oliver’s new show yet.
