20th Century Fox is reportedly planning another X-Men movie centered on Wolverine, the clawed character played by Hugh Jackman. The studio is looking to pair Jackman with director James Mangold, who had success with this year’s The Wolverine.
According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Mangold is in talks at the moment just to write a treatment. Lauren Shuler Donner, who has produced the previous X-Men movies, is on board for this one. There’s no title or plot at this moment.
The news was also reported by TheWrap today.
While The Wolverine did earn decent reviews from critics, the film was not an enormous success in North America, grossing $132 million, notes Box Office Mojo. However, the $120 million film, which features Japanese actors in starring roles, has done incredibly well overseas, grossing $281.2 million.
A sequel to The Wolverine will be the third time the character will have a film to himself. In 2009, Jackman appeared in the critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which grossed $179 million domestically.
Mangold is known as the writer/director of Walk The Line and Cop Land and also directed the 2007 version of 3:10 To Yuma.
As for Jackman, he’s coming off an acclaimed performance in Prisoners and is set to play Wolverine again in X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as Chappie.
