Earlier this year, one of the hot topics around Hollywood was the production of Jane Got A Gun, a Western originally slated to pair Natalie Portman and Jude Law. It sounded like an interesting project, especially with Lynne Ramsay, the director of We Need To Talk About Kevin, behind the camera. But then things went bad, with Ramsay walking out on day one. Now that the film is in post-production with a new director, the producers have filed a lawsuit against her in federal court.

KRQE in New Mexico, where the film was shot, reports that the producers filed the lawsuit on Monday, alleging that the relationship with Ramsay was on the rocks even before production was supposed to start.

The suit claims that Ramsay was paid $500,000 to work on the script and direct. But she never tweaked the script, which meant production couldn’t start on time in February on March. The suit also alleges that Ramsay was dangerous during this time, showing up drunk and ignored safety rules.

“During this period of time, Defendant Ramsay was repeatedly under the influence of alcohol, was abusive to members of the cast and crew and was generally disruptive,” the lawsuit reads. ”Defendant Ramsay failed to adhere to proper safety protocol for handling weapons on set, when she pointed a prop gun directly at a camera and, in turn, at the camera crew before first taking proper precautions.”

Jane Got A Gun became the focus of media reports in March, when Ramsay’s departure was first reported. Within hours, Warrior director Gavin O’Connor joined, but then Law dropped out. Bradley Cooper then joined, only to drop out days later. Eventually, Portman’s Star Wars co-star Ewan McGregor agreed to join.

The good news for Jane Got A Gun, which will also star Joel Edgerton, is that it at least has a distributor. HitFix notes that Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company are distributing it, although no release date is set.

This ordeal will at least make for some interesting behind-the-scenes features on the DVD.
