Lee Daniels, the director behind this summer’s hit Lee Daniels’ The Butler, said in an interview this week that he wants to make a gay superhero movie and has Magic Mike actor Alex Pettyfer in mind to play one of the lead roles.
Daniels told Out Magazine that he is looking to make an “interracial love affair action movie” that he calls a gay “Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but the two good-looking guys as the action heroes.”
According to Indiewire, Daniels was probably too excited to talk about the project, though, since he spoiled the twist ending. “We don't find out they're gay until the end of the movie,” he told the magazine.
When explaining the casting, Daniels said, “Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He's so hot, isn't he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that's so…I love him to death.”
Daniels is also confident that the success of The Butler will allow him to make it without any problems from a studio. “I don't think I'm going to have a problem now,” he told the magazine. “I made a $100 million for The Butler. I'm in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about.”
Daniels has plenty of ideas for his first post-Butler project. In August, he said he wanted to to make his long-gestating Janis Joplin biopic with Amy Adams.
Also, in September, Deadline reported that he and Butler writer Danny Strong are working on a hip-hop pilot that landed at Fox.
