If you can say anything about science fiction, it’s that writers love to come up with creative ways to bring characters back from the dead. That’s what James Cameron is doing in order to bring Stephen Lang back for his three Avatar sequels.
Lang will be back to play Col. Miles Quaritch, who died at the end of 2009’s Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time, but somehow, he will be back for the Avatar sequels.
“Steven was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back,” Cameron said in a statement to Deadline. Cameron wouldn’t say how Lang’s character will come back (we need something to speculate for the next two-plus years), but said that he will appear in all three new films.
“His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga,” Cameron explained. “I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.”
Lang appeared in Fox’s short-lived sci-fi series Terra Nova and has several films and TV roles coming up.
Cameron announced three Avatar sequels in August. The first will be out in December 2016 and two more will follow in 2017 and 2018. They will all be filmed simultaneously.
The Titanic director also set his writing team. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Shane Salerno (Savages) will assist Cameron in coming up with the further adventures of Pandora.
