Charlie Hunnam is out of Fifty Shades of Grey, that much is certain. But what is still not clear is the exact reason why he suddenly left the high profile project. The Sons of Anarchy actor may have cited his busy TV schedule, but Hollywood is still speculating the cause of Saturday’s shocking news.
On Saturday afternoon, Universal and Focus Features cited Hunnam’s “immersive TV schedule” for not “allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.” However, a source for TheWrap notes that Hunnam’s CAA reps and FX had come up with a schedule that would have freed up Hunnam from Sons so he could start filming 50 Shades next month. So, what really drove Hunnam to drop out?
“This isn't a surprise because what he was taking on with this role was not what Charlie wants in his future career,” another source told E! News. “The attention and the pressure was intense.”
The source explained that Hunnam isn’t looking to become a huge international superstar. “Plus, he hates conforming and being told what to do. This role would force him to have to be something he is not,” the source added.
Two sources for The Hollywood Reporter gave a similar story, noting that Hunnam had felt overwhelmed by the media attention. At a recent Sons red carpet event, he even had to have extra security. No one wanted to talk about the new season of the acclaimed show. Questions all surrounded 50 Shades.
Producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are now left without one-half of 50 Shades lead roles filled. Dakota Johnson is still on board to play Anastasia Steele and the film is currently set for release on Aug. 1, 2014. Unless Universal finds someone quick, reaching that deadline may become one daunting task.
