Aldon Smith has been charged with illegal possession of three assault weapons he purchased in Arizona. These include two rifles, which he allegedly bought the day before a road game during his rookie season.
These felony charges have their roots in a house party that occurred on June 29, 2012 at Smith's home. According to SFGate.com Santa Clara County prosecutors said Wednesday that at this party, Smith was stabbed and two people were shot.
Smith is expected to surrender to the charges by the end of this month. If convicted, he could face up to four years and four months in prison.
According to NFL.com during the investigation, Santa Clara deputies found multiple weapons including the three illegal ones, which were all bought in Arizona.
The 49ers organization acknowledged the charges and issued a statement.
"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent developments with Aldon arising from an incident at his home in 2012. We recognize the serious nature of this situation, as does Aldon, and will continue to monitor it closely. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment."
