Syria officially admitted on Tuesday it did have chemical weapons and that it would cease production.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem also said the country would admit to where stockpile locations were to the U.N., The Wall Street Journal reports. Syria would also be willing to sign the international convention banning chemical weapons, Moallem said.
Syria finally confessed as their ally, Russia is fighting with France over a U.N. resolution to try and force the country to give up its chemical weapons.
According to Fox News, Russia's plan was to have Syrian chemical weapons placed under international control as they get dismantled. Some believe that would be difficult.
Experts say that Syria has over 1,000 tons of chemical agents all over the country and that's ignoring the skirmishes with rebels. When Russia proposed the plan to try and prevent a military strike from the U.S., Syria quickly jumped aboard.
It has been admitted that the plan would be difficult to implement.
Independent chemical weapons consultant and disarmament expert Jean Pascal Zanders commented, "This situation falls outside anything that we've known so far."
Now that Syria has finally come clean about having chemical weapons, it will be interesting to see how the situation goes from here.
