Newark mayor and New Jersey Senate candidate Cory Booker has commented on the Twitter conversation he had with a Portland, Oregon stripper, brushing off its importance. He noted that, as a frequent Twitter user, he has interacted with thousands of followers.

“When somebody like this person extends kindness my way,” Booker, 44, told reporters Thursday, according to The Associated Press. “I respond in kind.”

Booker added that he does not “study” people’s profiles on the site. “I tweet people back from all different backgrounds. It’s not something I pay attention to.”

Booker’s interaction with stripper Lynsie Lee went public when Lee herself sent BuzzFeed screenshots of a direct message conversation they had. “And the East Coast loves you, and by the East Coast, I mean me,” Booker wrote in one message. When she said she was “blushing,” he replied, “Its only fair.”

Lee has been relishing the national attention the story has received, sending out several tweets about speaking with reporters today. She spoke with Portland station KPTV, saying that she never met Booker in person. "I was flirting with him, I thought he was cute, and I was excited to meet him at the premiere, but he couldn't make it, so we just kept flirting," she said.
