3. Gossip Girl: Dan, Olivia and Vanessa
Network television can only go so far with their sex scenes. The CW is one network that likes to test limits, and their now-concluded hit show Gossip Girl often did just that. Episode 9 of season 3, entitled "They Shoot Humphreys, Don't They?" featured a threesome, one of the most scandalous scenes of the show at that point. Dan Humphrey and his BFF Vanessa (Penn Badgley and Jessica Szohr) have befriended the famous actress Olivia Burke (Hilary Duff) while she's attending NYU in an attempt to get a taste of a normal life. However, she soon is pushed to leave college for a movie role, so the three spend Olivia's last day in New York helping her live through all the must-have college experiences listed in a newspaper article. As they are drinking at Dan's that night, Olivia (who'd also become Dan's girlfriend) learns the only thing off the list that they hadn't done was a threesome. She says she's only had one in a movie, and asked the other two if they'd had one, to which they said no. An awkward silence ensues which Olivia ends after taking a swig and kissing Dan. An uncomfortable Vanessa looks about ready to leave when Olivia kisses her too. Then, with Olivia's encouragement, Vanessa and Dan kiss. The music and lighting is set to add to the sexual tension but the camera cuts out, returning only to show the three in bed the following morning. (However, it should be noted that in the follow-up episode, Dan does have a dream/flashback where things are a little more revealing and even more sexy, though presumably he embellishes a fair amount.) Despite the limited action, the scene was quite sexy since the actors are all attractive, the chemistry of the characters was undeniable, and the build-up was somewhat realistic and well executed.
