6. Pretty in Pink (1986)
Romance: Love triangle between Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald), Blane McDonnagh (Andrew McCarthy), and Duckie or Phil Dale (Jon Cryer)
Working-class high school student, Walsh, falls hard for the sweet and sensitive preppy rich kid, McDonnagh. Her doting childhood sweetheart, Duckie, tries to protect her from heartbreak when she engages in a relationship with McDonnagh. They face the high school social criticisms of their relationship from friends and fight through the turmoil. Walsh’s Duckie fights for Walsh, but finds his own “meant-to-be” love. This movie has the classic ‘80s prom, with McDonnagh realizing what is truly important, love over status and popularity, and even works things out with Duckie. Walsh stands up for herself, with the help of reliable old Duckie and enters the prom standing tall and proud. After Duckie explains how McDonnagh is one of the good guys, not the typical stuck-up rich kid, Walsh chases after him and she and McDonnagh find themselves kissing passionately in the parking lot outside the dance.
