The lineup for the 70th annual Venice Film Festival was announced Thursday morning, with several anticipated American films in competition. The out of competition selections also includes some interesting picks.
The Zero Theorem, the new film from Brazil director Terry Gilliam, is being screened in competition. The film stars Christoph Waltz, Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis and Ben Whishaw.
James Franco has another directing project premiering, titled Child of God with Scott Haze, Tim Blake and Nelson Jim Parrack. It is the actor’s second project to be screened at a major film festival, after As I Lay Dying premiered at the Cannes film Festival earlier this year.
Other American productions include Errol Morris’ The Unknown Known documentary about Donald Rumsfeld, Kelly Reichardt’s Night Moves with Jesse Eisenberg, David Gordon Green’s Joe with Nicolas Cage, Peter Landesman’s Parkland with Zac Efron and Jonathan Glazer’s Under The Sun with Scarlett Johansson.
Also in competition is the Italian documentary Sacro Gra, Hayao Miyazaki’s latest, Kaze Tachinu and Stephen Fears’ Philomena with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.
The out of competition group includes Alex Gibney’s Lance Armstrong documentary The Armstrong Lie and Ki-Duk Kim’s Moebius. Steve Knight’s Locke with tom Hardy will also be screened out of competition.
Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George clooney will open the festival.
The Venice Film Festival kicks off on Aug. 28 and runs to Sept. 7.
