“99 Luftballoons,” a protest song, appeared on Nena’s 1983 self-titled album. The English version, which is not an exact translation, is known as “99 Red Balloons.” In the United States, the German version was preferred, as it earned the Billboard #2 spot, becoming the highest charting German song in the US.
