4. “Hangin’ Tough”
This title track off the band’s 1988 smash portrayed the boys’ rougher side as well, allowing them to dance their way even further into young girls’ hearts and minds. Donnie goes on about how he and his boys are going to not take any guff from anyone. This kind of confidence made young girls love the guys even more, with lyrics like, “Listen to everybody if you wanna take a chance/Just get on the floor and do the new kids’ dance/Don’t worry ‘bout nuthin’ ‘cause it won’t take long/We’re gonna put you in a trance with a funky song/Hangin’ tough, hangin’ tough/We’re rough/Everybody’s always talkin’ ‘bout who’s on top/Don’t cross our path ‘cause you’re gonna get stomped/We ain’t gonna give anybody any slack/And if you try to keep us down we’re gonna come right back.” This more rugged side to the guys was a new thing and only added to their mass appeal.
