Top 10: Father/Daughter & Father/Son relationships in media

1. Burt (Mike O’Malley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) Hummel in Glee

Burt Hummel is the best example of a good father in a more modern situation. It’s always hard for a parent to try and understand their teenager, but the complication is increased tenfold when their child reveals that they are gay. Some parents4 don’t take this news well, and kick their children out, or tell them they have a disease and try and send them away to camps to make them straight again. But Burt Hummel was the most understanding father when Kurt finally confessed to him that he liked other guys. Though the two did suffer from a few obstacles along the way (Burt found it difficult to have a sex talk with Kurt, and also was weirded out when Kurt had a platonic sleepover with Blaine), at the end of the day, the two were always there for each other, and Kurt’s sexual orientation was never an issue. Burt was always defending his son and trying to make things better and easier for him. His love never changed or disappeared because his son wasn’t the ideal one for a “man’s man” type in Ohio. He was the father that not only every gay kid could hope for, but frankly any kid at all could ever want.
