Since Lil Wayne rapped about Emmett Till in his remix with Future’s song, “Karate Chop,” he has received backlash in the form of having the song scrapped by their record label, and having his apology not received so welcomingly by the Till family.
Back in February, Epic Records released an apology, saying the song was an “unauthorized” leak and “out of respect for the legacy of Emmett Till and his family and the support of the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. ... we are going through great efforts to take down the unauthorized version.”
Lil Wayne himself has penned an open letter to the family, but they said the letter “falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.”
Now, the Mountain Dew has dropped the rapper’s endorsement deal.
"We do not plan any additional work with Lil Wayne moving forward. His offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand,” PepsiCo said in a statement, Zap2it reports.
A rep for the Till family has responded, saying “We commend Mountain Dew for taking action towards better social responsibility, and now I finally feel that we can exhale and focus on our beloved Mamie Till Mobley's charge ... Let's get on with the business of positive thinking and living."
