This movie follows the tale of a young, country-raised North Carolina teacher who moves to Harlem, New York, to teach in the New York City public school system. After a quick realization of the body of elementary school students he teaches, he resorts to unconventional methods of teaching that engage the students already experiencing real life tragedies and hardships in a love and lust for learning. The below video showcases a sample in which he grasps his students’ attention and delivers the message of his history lesson for the day, and his students participate in an instant. Matthew Perry delivers a stunning, inspirational and very engrossing performance. If this story does not motivate you to become a great teacher or mentor in any of your fields of study, you are clearly a robot. The story of this 2006 made-for-television film inspires all educators to disregard all societal standards and orthodox modes of teaching conduct and to experiment in ways unknown to the human social mind to reach into the very meaning of what it means to be a child, and to seed the change for the better as you pave the way for their future.
