It was difficult to find a decent clip on YouTube from the movie, nevertheless, that just adds to the great inspiration and awe this movie transpires to all audiences. You may use Meryl Streep as an excellent reason, I certainly have, that this rousing tale of an upstate violinist who teaches in the inner city public school system of East Harlem, New York City, has received the number one spot on this top 10 list of best and most inspiring tales of a teacher’s influence in the school setting in film. But over all else, I chose this film because the story it tells is an inspiring one that lifts your soul through the use and magic of music. In this 1999 feature film, Meryl Streep portrays a struggling woman abandoned by her husband, leaving her with their two children. Unknowing of what the future holds for her and contemplating suicide, she lifts herself from her knees and slowly works her way to stability by becoming a teacher in the New York City public elementary school system of East Harlem, otherwise known as one of the rockiest and most unstable neighborhoods of New York. However, though extremely difficult at first, she captivates the hearts of her elementary students through the use of magic and slowly begins to implement the change in their lives that will stick with them for the rest of their years to come. Her violin program becomes slowly successful until the time comes that the school system has cut art and music from the education program, including her community-renowned violin class. However, she is not going down easily, and as she had firmly stated in the film, “They are wrong, and they’re going to get a big fight.” Rising above all odds, the story of this woman is remarkably inconceivable.
