Top 10 Environmental Issues and Concerns

5. Air, land and water pollution

The oceans are huge, but marine life is being over-harvested, which is throwing off the balance. With off-shore oil rigs lacking fail-safes, we’ve polluted the Gulf of Mexico, a circumstance that will take years to naturally resolve itself. This is hurtful to all marine species and biodiversity. There are uncontrolled releases of pollutants into the atmosphere, which is mainly the effects of burning fossil fuel. This is destroying our ozone layer and contributing to climate change. Plus, it is detrimental to our individual health. We need to strive for “clean air.” Land pollution includes introducing invasive species that are foreign to native lands, the growing of a single crop (monocropping) for economic reasons rather than environmental, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers that seep into the groundwater supply. Crop rotation is the only answer to the problems created by monocropping, as it replenishes nutrients and atmospheric nitrogen which nitrogen-dependent plants use to grow in its natural life cycle.
